How much swimming ability do I need to join?
Not as much as you think. Masters Swimming is for just about everyone, not only experienced competitive swimmers. If you can complete one length in a lap pool without stopping, you are qualified to swim with us.
What if I don't know how to swim all the strokes?
No problem. If you're not comfortable swimming certain strokes, you may swim whatever stroke you like. If you'd like to learn a stroke, one of our coaches would be happy to offer tips during the workout.
To swim with any Masters swim club there is a $40 registration fee that must be paid to United States Masters Swimming. This registration is good for one calendar year. Temescal Aquatic Masters offers two ways to pay for workouts. You may either buy a 5-workout card for $30, or pay $45 in monthly dues, which allows you to attend as many workouts as you want in a month. Additional fees may be required to participate in any USMS events, such as swim meets.
Yes. Your first workout with us is free.
How do I get started swimming with Temescal Aquatic Masters?
Come down to the pool for any of our workouts. Introduce yourself to the coach - he or she will give you a new swimmer information packet, and ask about your swimming history. Based on this, the coach will assign you to a lane with other people about your same speed. If you'd like to go faster or slower you can always move up or down, even on your first day. You'll find welcoming lanemates anywhere you go.
What is the history of Temescal Aquatic Masters?
According to Bruce Bagnell, "When the team was founded, we gave the official name of Temescal Aquatic Masters to the US Masters officials but at the same time declared ourselves the 'Emma Goldman Aquatic Collective.'"
Who runs Temescal Aquatic Masters?
According to Bruce Bagnell, "Unlike other teams, we have never had an elected president or structure other than the consensus of the group called the 'steering committee,' which basically has always been whoever has chosen to attend the meetings, with the result tempered by a little polling of the members. The team is a registered non-profit but not a tax-exempt charity. The team is 'owned' by the members."
