Claudia Hein
Morning Coach
Claudia is the newest addition to the Temescal Masters, and is bringing a new level of excitement and enthusiasm to our 5:30 AM weekday workouts. She's been a swim coach since she was 17 years old, when she began coaching her summer swim team, the Bethesda Barracudas in Maryland just outside of Washington, DC. She spent her early years in Bonn, Germany before she and her family relocated to D.C. when she was 7. She arrived in California to attend UC Berkeley, where she earned a degree in African American Studies. While at Cal, she started coaching for the Oakland Parks and Rec summer swim leagues (Fremont and DeFremery swim teams) and working with nonprofits that serve youth and families. She is proud to have been a founding board member of the Oakland Community Pools Project, where she coached and taught swim lessons with the Oakland Undercurrents. While working as the Coordinator for O.P R. summer swim leagues, Claudia became acquainted with coach Karin and Temescal Masters during one of our swimathons. Claudia remembers being impressed by our swimmers' "generosity and commitment to both swimming and community support." Claudia appreciaties Temescal Masters for our team's openness, swimmers' interest in learning, and care for one another. When she's not coaching or swimming, Claudia is a social worker/therapist at Family Paths, Inc. where she provides home visiting therapy for youth and families in Oakland.
